Dick Van Dyke, 86, To Receive Prestigious Film Award
A career spanning an incredible six decades has seen the 86-year old win awards and garner praise for his TV and film roles."DICk is the consummate entertainer, an enormously talented performer whose work has crossed nearly every major category of entertainment," said Sag's Ken Howard", adding, "He sets a high bar for actors. Stage, big screen, small screen, literally everywhere he has worked he has inspired millions of fans and has had a tremendously positive impact on the industry and the world. After his Broadway debut in 1959, Van Dyke starred in The DICk Van Dyke Show. His role in Disney's Mary Poppins launched his film career, and roles in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and DICk Tracey followed. Perhaps his most well known role, however, is that of Dr Mark Sloan in the 90's cult classic Diagnosis: Murder, which co-starred his son, Barry, as a police detective. The father and son pairing were a formidable force, and the show remains loved today.
A keen philanthropist, Van Dyke supports several charities as well as volunteering at the Los Angeles homeless shelter The Midnight Mission for nearly twenty years: something his lifetime achievement award celebrates as well as his distinguished acting talent. Closer to 90 than 80, the man shows no signs of relenting, and still performs regularly as part of music group The Vantastix. Amazing.
