Diana Concert Raises £1.2m

The Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium raised £1.2 million for charity, it has been confirmed.

The July 1st memorial show was held ahead of the tenth anniversary of Princess Diana's death and featured acts such as Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Nelly Furtado, Kanye West and Take That.

With 62,000 people watching in the stadium and a television audience of millions around the world, the success of the concert means that eight charities will receive at least £150,000 each from the proceeds.

The Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, formed after her death in 1997, is one of the recipients, while Sentebale, a charity formed by Prince Harry which helps Aids orphans in Lesotho is also a beneficiary.

The other organisations involved include London hospitals the Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street, homeless charity Centrepoint, the Leprosy Mission, the National Aids Trust and the English National Ballet.

Tessa Green, chairman of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, said

"We are delighted to have been involved in the Concert for Diana which has been a fantastic experience for the whole hospital community. Our guests and staff who attended had an amazing time and this wonderful donation is the icing on the cake."

"We are absolutely delighted with this news," added Keith Nicholson, acting national director of the Leprosy Mission said.

"An amount of £150,000 will mean that an enormous number of people can be cured of leprosy and not suffer the stigma all too often associated with the disease. Now that we know the amount involved we will be looking at funding a specific project which will make a significant difference to the lives of many people affected by leprosy."

A public inquest into the cause of the Princess' death is currently underway.
