Depp: I Never Wanted To Act

by | 11 January 2008

Johnny Depp has said that he never wanted to be an actor and that music was always his "first love".

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine the star, who is currently promoting his new musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, in which he sings his own songs, said he only became interested in films as they were financially rewarding.

Depp, who has played a number of unconventional roles such as Edward Scissorhands and rogue pirate Jack Sparrow, stated that he was a musician at heart and was initially unconcerned about the acting jobs roles he took up.

The actor said: "I never wanted to be an actor. It just seemed like a good way to make easy money.

"I didn't care what the movies were. If they're going to pay me, fine," he added.

He also told the magazine about how he joined a rock and roll band in his teens and played at parties in his neighbourhood. The Pirates of the Caribbean star spoke about his fascination with the guitar, adding that the first song he learnt to play in full was Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

Depp said that it was "absolute perfection" to be performing at parties and added that he felt music was his calling in those days.

"It was freedom. Right off the bat, there was no question: I had found my future," he explained.

Last night, the star attended the Leicester Square premiere of his latest film in which he plays the role of a murderous barber.
