Ariana, Zooey, J-Lo, Miley! When Actresses Become Songstresses 4306712 News

There seems to be a special musical buzz in the entertainment business at the moment reserved for screen actresses who are wanting to spread their wings in their career - and maybe earn some more money too. Whether it's Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande blowing everyone away with her stunning vocal range as she gears up to release her second album this summer, or indie favourite Jenny Lewis becoming ever more successful with her solo singing career after a good three years fronting a band, it appears that some actresses just can't resist testing their pipes in the recording studio. Even Hollywood sensation Scarlett Johansson dipped her toes in musical waters back in 2008 with her well-praised debut 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'.

While we're half expecting Keira Knightley to release a record any day now after singing on her latest drama 'Begin Again', we look at the film world's biggest female musical successes.

Jenny Lewis promoJenny Lewis: Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis this week released Voyager, her critically acclaimed third studio album. Although best known for her time fronting indie favourites, Rilo Kiley, music wasn't actually Lewis's first career choice, instead the Vegas native was intially known as an actress. Her early showbiz experience mainly consisted of TV roles, with small parts in the likes of 'Baywatch', 'Brooklyn Bridge' and 'The New Twilight Zone' in the 80s and early 90s as well as film stints on 'Troop Beverly Hills' and 'The Wizard'. Her last major acting venture came with 1995's black and white drama 'Don's Plum' alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire before she formed Rilo Kiley with then-boyfriend Blake Sennett.

Jennifer Lopez promoJennifer Lopez: The Jenny from the block, who would eventually become J-Lo, actually started her showbiz career as a dancer, on comedy series ‘In Living Colour’. Lopez’s dancing skills were impressive enough to land her a job touring with Janet Jackson in 1993, but she declined instead deciding to give acting a shot. Lopez’s early acting career included small roles in films such as My Family and Money Train, before she landed her big break, starring as tragic pop star Selena in the 1997 biopic. A year later she starred alongside George Clooney in thriller Out of Sight. Lopez then set about conquering the music world in 1999 with the release of her debut album On the 6 and she hasn't looked back since. Although Lopez still occasionally acts, she is arguably best known now for her musical talents which she displayed most recently with new album 'A.K.A.', released in June and once again landing her a space in the US chart's top 10.

Miley Cyrus promoMiley Cyrus: Miley might have come from a musical family, (well Billy Ray Cyrus is her father), but the famous twerker actually started out as an actress. Cyrus's first acting role came on medical drama 'Doc', where she acted alongside her father in three episodes, she also had a small role in Tim Burton's Big Fish. But Miley's big break came in 2006 when she starred in Disney series' Hannah Montana'. In the show Cyrus played a normal girl who moonlighted as a pop star, a role which would help her transition into the music business. Miley's first musical release was the soundtrack to Hannah Montana's first season, but Cyrus quickly became regarded as a singer in her own right and she released her first album a year later. Nowadays Hannah Montana is long over and Miley Cyrus has become a household name, leaving her Disney alter-ego well and truly behind. While she might've followed in the footsteps of Hilary Duff, who starred in Disney Channel's 'Lizzie McGuire', it seems Miley has encouraged plenty of other teen TV stars in their ambitions with 'Wizards of Waverly Place' actress Selena Gomez kicking off her music career in 2009 and 'Camp Rock''s Demi Lovato also making her mark around the same time. Even Lindsay Lohan hit the studio several years before that. It seems Disney is the new platform for broadening ambitions.

Kylie Minogue performingKylie Minogue: It’s easy to forget that Kylie Minogue wasn't always the pint-sized queen of pop. Way back in the mid 1980s, before Pete Waterman got hold of her, Kylie was an actress starring in Australia’s biggest soap opera, 'Neighbours'. Minogue played the role of Charlene, a school girl turned mechanic whose love interest was another future pop star, Jason Donovan. After performing covers of ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘The Loco-motion’ during a charity event in 1987, Minogue was offered a recording contract with Mushroom Records. A year later Kylie’s musical career was blossoming both at home and in the UK and she made the decision to say goodbye to acting. Since then the now 46 year old has sold over 70 million records worldwide and has become a member of Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame.

Ariana Grande promoAriana Grande: Ariana Grande might be just 21 years old but she’s a;ready had sucres as both an actress and singer. Her first big break break came when she was cast as Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon series 'Victorious' in 2011. She then landed her own spin off series, Sam and Cat alongside ‘iCarly’ star Jennette McCurdy, which latest for just one season. However by the time she’d landed her own sitcom, Grande had also made the move into music. She released her debut album Yours Truly in 2013 to critical acclaim, but Ariana would become a fully fledged pop star this summer with the success of single 'Problem' from her upcoming second album. Becoming one of the summer's biggest hits, 'Problem' reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the Bllboard Hot 100.

Zooey Deschanel promoZooey Deschanel: Given how her career has evolved, it’s fitting that Zooey Deschanel first came to our attention after her role in Almost Famous, a movie about music. Since finding fame as an actress, the future ‘New Girl’ couldn't help showing off her vocal talents wherever possible, in films such as Elf and 500 Days of Summer. But in 2007 Zooey officially made the move into music when she formed the band She & Him with musician M.Ward. So far the indie duo have released four albums, including 2011’s festive offering, A Very She & Him Christmas. Last month the duo hit the big time when they signed a new record deal with major label Columbia Records, ahead of their fifth album’s release later this year.

Juliette Lewis promoJuliette Lewis: Probably not the first woman who's going to pop into your head when you think of actresses turned singers but, after her Academy Award nomination following her role in Martin Scorsese's 'Cape Fear' remake back in 1991, it seemed a screen career just wasn't enough for budding rocker Juliette Lewis. After further blockbusters such as 'Natural Born Killers', 'From Dusk till Dawn', 'The Evening Star' and 'Starsky & Hutch', she released her debut album '...Like a Bolt of Lightning' in 2004 alongside her band Juliette and the Licks. She proceeded to release two more over the next consecutive years and made her last record, 'Terra Incognita', in 2009. She's back to acting now, but we wouldn't be disappointed to see another musical venture.

Taylor Momsen promoTaylor Momsen: Another actress who invoked her inner rock goddess was 'Gossip Girl''s Taylor Momsen, whose early acting role in 2000's 'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas' would never have suggested a heavily eyelinered and scantily clad future. Her success as the lead singer in The Pretty Reckless has been phenomenal as of late, with her March 2014 album 'Going to Hell' reaching the top 5 in the US album chart - quite a remarkable progression since they started out in 2010. However, we are still missing her face on our TV screens and awaiting at least a temporary screen comeback.

Why Are Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato Feuding Once Again? 4274896 News

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were thought to be the closest of friends, but it appears they are just beginning to enter their own feud. Signs that the two stars are not seeing eye-to-eye first surfaced when Lovato unfollowed the 21 year-old singer on Twitter, and even may have called her a b---h in a since deleted tweet.

"Swimming away from the bulls--t bye b--ch," the cryptic tweet reportedly read, along with a photo of the 'Heart Attack' singer swimming in the sea. Although it isn't clear if the post was directed at Gomez, Lovato unfollowing her on-off BFF heavily suggests it was.

Even though the tweet was deleted from her account, it still remains circling the web.

The duo have known each other for many years since starring in on 'Barney & Friends' together, and back in February Lovato opened up about how "amazing" Gomez is.

"Selena is, I've known her for 14 years and we've been best friends," the former X Factor judge told E! News. "That's all of her business, and I just want to let her do her thing. And yeah, she's amazing. I love her."

The 'Come & Get It' singer also spoke candidly of their friendship, and previous falling out, in the March issue of Seventeen Magazine.

Lovato's problem with Gomez is still unclear

"I've known her since we were 7, and we did fall apart for a while," Gomez said. "She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing.I processed it saying, 'OK, I don't understand what she's going through so I'm just going to do this.'"

"I don't think it was fair," she added. "I'm so happy that I have her back in my life now."

So it still remains a mystery why the pair have fallen out once again.

Could Justin Bieber Be Behind Selena Gomez & Demi Lovato's 'Feud'? 4273718 News

Are Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez feuding? They used to be the best of friends but now Lovato has unfollowed Gomez on Twitter and reportedly posted a message seemingly directed at Gomez on the social media site. The pair has been friends for more than 14 years, ever since they starred together on Barney and Friends. So what has happened in the past six months to ruin a seemingly perfect friendship?

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez
Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez photographed together at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards.

Shortly after unfollowing Gomez on Twitter on Thursday (3rd July), Lovato posted a picture of herself swimming in the sea with the caption "Swimming away from the bulls**t bye bitch." Fans and numerous media outlets have assumed the tweet is directed at Gomez as Lovato has seemingly indicated (via unfollowing) that she is no longer interested in being friends with Gomez, as E! reports.

This is certainly a change from January of this year when the pair gushed about each other in separate interviews. Although, as the Mail reports, they have both admitted their relationship was strained in the past it appeared to be all behind them at the beginning of this year. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest in January, Lovato said she and Gomez had "an incredible relationship". Whilst Gomez said, in an interview with Seventeen, Lovato was "the only person that I would tell the deepest, darkest secrets to. The only person."

Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato apparently unfollowed Gomez on Twitter.

So what exactly has changed since January? Gomez has certainly been having a rocky time. The actress checked into a rehab facility at the beginning of January but left after a relatively short stay. Her reason for entering the Arizona facility was not substance related which led media outlets to speculate her relationship with Justin Bieber may have been behind her need for a break. Yet, in the past month, it appears Gomez and Bieber are back together. Could this be the reason behind Gomez and Lovato's alleged feud? Perhaps Lovato is disenchanted by the prospect of picking up the pieces if Gomez and Bieber once again split.

However, there may be a more innocent reason behind the unfollowing. Singer LeAnn Rimes, who has had her share of Twitter arguments, claimed Lovato unfollowing Gomez may have simply been an accident. She spoke to E! and explained how easily it can be done. The 31-year-old claimed that, although "that unfollow button can actually say a whole lot," Twitter accounts accidently unfollow people. Rimes said "They [Twitter] can unfollow people randomly. Like, I've had people get mad at me like, 'You're unfollowing me?' No, I didn't unfollow you! I didn't do anything. It was Twitter's fault. So, it could be. It could be."

That could well be a possibility but it does seem somewhat unlikely as, out of the 283 people Lovato follows, Gomez would be the one 'Twitter' chose to unfollow.

Demi Lovato Opens Up About Gay Grandfather In Heartfelt Speech 4263024 News

Demi Lovato is known to be a passionate supporter of gay rights, and recently she revealed why.

The 21 year-old singer appeared on Logo TV's first 'Trailblazers' show, which aired on Thursday (June 26th), and in a heartfelt speech told the audience that her grandfather was gay.

Lovato wanted to honor her late family member and before presenting an award at the inaugural ceremony, she spoke of how her grandfather was a "trailblazer" as well.

"I've never spoken about this before, but my grandfather was a trailblazer himself," Lovato said, via E!News. "He was brave enough to come out in the 1960s, and I feel a lot of my spirit has come from him."

She continued, "He passed away a few years later, and I only wish he could have seen all the progress that has been made. It's such an honor to be welcomed and embraced by the LGBT community."

After presenting an award to Neflix's hit series 'Orange Is the New Black,' Lovato spoke with MTV News about paying tribute to her late grandfather.

"My mom's birth dad, actually had my mom and was with my grandma and then he split with her because he came out of the closet and that was in the '60s. So that to me is the epitome of a trailblazer, where you set an example and you do something that is brave and courageous and I was able to talk about that in my little speech," she said. "And that was exciting for me."

"He was a hairdresser, so I call him my glampop. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years later so I never got to meet him," Demi continued. "But I do feel like one of the reasons why I have a lot of courage to speak out and stand up for what I believe in came genetically from my grandfather who had the courage to come out of the closet in the '60s."

The 'Heart Attack' singer has already served as grand marshal of Los Angeles' gay pride parade earlier this month, and is scheduled to perform this weekend at New York's gay pride celebrations.

"I've never spoken about this before, but my grandfather was a trailblazer himself," Lovato said before presenting an award to Orange Is the New Black Monday night at Logo TV's first Trailblazers event (quote via E!News). The Skyscraper singer also thanked the LGBT community for welcoming and embracing her. Demi Lovato Opens Up About Overcoming Personal Struggles After 2010 Rehab Stint 4257807 News

The Demi Lovato of 2014 is very different from the same person several years ago.

The American singer checked into rehab in October 2010 to receive treatment for her addiction to the class A drug cocaine and alcohol, as well as suffering from an eating disorder.

But four years later, Lovato is living proof that life can get better, and she recently opened up about her progression in Seventeen’s August 2014 issue.

"Since I went to treatment, there have been days when it's felt really easy, and I've felt great about where I am. But then I have moments when it's not. That's life," she revealed.

Adding, "You can't just take your mind and your body into the shop and get it fixed. It doesn't come out repaired. It's not like a car. It takes time—pace yourself. Every day is a new opportunity to change your life and be who you want to be."

"I used to think that confidence came from what other people thought about me, and boys and everything else," Lovato continued. "But now I realize that confidence comes from what I feel about myself, and reassuring myself that I can do whatever I want and be whoever I want."

One big change that enormously helped ‘Heart Attack’ singer was to ditch any friends that could hold her back.

"I like to have friends in my life who believe they're going places and are working toward their dreams," she explained. "When you're growing and the people around you aren't, that's when you have to start shedding them. I've done that a lot over the past few years, but it has been so worth it, because the people in my life today inspire me to keep being creative, to have fun, and to be a good person."

Keeping positive is very important to Lovato also, she even advises people to put money into a jar every time they say something insecure or bad about themselves.

"I tell myself five things that I'm grateful for, for every negative thing that I think," she confessed. "You know how people have swear jars, where if you swear you have to put a dollar in the jar? You could do that with feeling insecure—every time a friend says something bad about [himself/herself], they have to put a dollar in a jar. [And then] you can donate it to charity."

One Direction Take Note: How Celebrities Survived And Thrived After Their Drugs Scandals 4218724 News

So the clean-cut guys of One Direction (two of them, anyway) have been caught on video smoking weed. It’s not entirely surprising, especially to anyone familiar with celebrity culture. In fact, the drugs bust is now a rite of passage, as common as the coming of age album or the risqué awards show performance. And while for some celebrities, the drugs bust spells the beginning of the end, others have managed to build careers (or transition into adulthood) on the back of drugs charges.

One Direction
Don't worry, 1D can still recover from this.

5. Kate Moss’s waif-ish look and thin frame have attracted accusations of drug abuse ever since she first came on the scene in the late 80s/early 90s. Back then, Moss kept pushing away claims of drug use and eating disorders, but the rumors never died down – until she was actually outed for taking cocaine in 2005. But the then 31-year-old model had never had a spotless reputation to begin with, so instead of ruining her career, the drug scandal re-started it. In the wake of her cocaine scandal, Moss was hired by eighteen top fashion and cosmetic brands, including Rimmel, Agent Provocateur, Virgin Mobile, Calvin Klein Jeans and Burberry. Moss designed a collection, in collaboration with Katy England, for Topshop. One year after her drug scandal, Moss won the Model of the Year prize at the British Fashion Awards, dividing public opinion once again.

Kate Moss has been rocking the heroin chic look since the 90s.

4. Rihanna. RiRi played the good girl card for like two seconds at the very beginning of her career (she did start performing as a teenager, so that makes sense even for legal reasons.) As soon as her third album was out however, the claws also came out or, in her case, the suspicious, cocaine-like substances, taken from a random guy’s head at Coachella. These days, Rihanna is the queen of scandal – be it with her music or personal life. Clearly, it all worked out for her.

Rihanna
Good girl gone bad indeed.

3. Demi Lovato. Lovato is a former Disney starlet, so the fall from grace sort of goes with the territory. We had to put her on the list, though, if only because of the way she has handled herself since. Lovato went into rehab for her eating disorder in 2010. She then returned with a moderately successful, emotionally charged album in 2011 and took a job as a judge on the X Factor. While Demi might not be the subject of teen mania these days, she remains an outspoken advocate for healthy living, mental health and self care. Hats off to you, Miss Lovato.

2. Miley Cyrus. Miley also walked the well trodden path of the Disney starlet, until she turned 18 and went rogue. So far she's twerked on Robin Thicke, made frequent and clear drug references and even lit up on stage at the MTV EGSUnlike a lot of her fellow actress/singers however, Miley’s image change looks completely intentional and controlled. Don’t be fooled by the references to weed and Molly or the on-stage twerking – this is no train wreck. Miley Cyrus knows exactly what she’s doing.

Miley Cyrus
Oh, Miley.

1. This one is debatable, but we’re giving the top spot to Cara Delevingne. Why? Girl dropped an actual bag full of *cough* “a suspicious white powder substance”, as per the Daily Mail out on the street earlier this month, but still managed to avoid an actual scandal. Maybe it’s expected at this point or maybe Cara just has a killer PR team, but when that kind of blunder doesn’t even slow down your career, you know you’ve made it.

So don’t worry, 1D. This doesn’t have to be the beginning of a Bieber-esque spiral into chaos. If these celebrities can come back stronger, better and even more successful from complete meltdowns, that pot smoking video isn’t even worth worrying about.

Demi Lovato Talks Confidence & Sexiness After Making Maxim Hot 100 List 4215578 News

Demi Lovato is looking sexier than ever lately!

The 21 year-old star has already battled one eventful life, from drug abuse to alcoholism and even suffering from an eating disorder, but she is now clean and healthy.

And this obvious shows as she made it to No.40 on the Maxim Hot 100 issue, which will be out on June 3rd.

Lovato spoke with the magazine on what it takes to look sexy, and the former Disney star had some great advice.

"To me, sexiness stems from being confident and comfortable in your own skin," she told the mag.

Lovato was also asked what her favorite attribute was, to which she quickly replied, "my butt."

"The ability to work at bettering myself," she continued, when talking about her mentality. "I'm not perfect, no one is, but I'm working at becoming better every day. Every day I can look back and say I'm in a better place than I was yesterday."

The singer also revealed what she looks for in a man, stating: "To get my attention a guy must be genuine, supportive, real, and have the ability to make me laugh!"

Even though Lovato is looking very sexy, this does not mean she wants to talk about sex as her relatives will end up hearing about it.

"Sex is a part of life and it's a personal decision. Some people put it in their music, which is awesome and good for them," she explained. "But for me, there's still that weird feeling in the back of my head that's like, All right, I know that my mom and dad are going to hear it and my little sister, and that's really weird for me."
