Dean Martin - Dean Martin Tried To Price Himself Out Of Tv Deal
Beloved crooner Dean Martin landed one of television's biggest deals to host his own long-running variety show - by trying to price himself out of the market.
The late actor/singer's daughter Deana recalls her father sitting the family down to tell them about the TV deal he was about to be offered by Nbc bosses - and he really didn't want to do it.
She tells the Los Angeles Times, "He came home one night and said, 'They are going to offer me a TV show. I don't want to go in every day and do a TV show.'
"He said, 'They want to have a meeting with me. When I go in tomorrow, I am going to ask them for a ridiculous amount of money, so they will turn me down. I am going to tell them I don't want to rehearse, so I'm sure they will turn me down. And then I am going to tell them I only want to tape it on Sunday afternoons after one. So, for sure, they won't go for it.'
"He came home that night and said, 'They went for it. So now I have to do it.'"
The Dean Martin Comedy Hour show was must-see viewing in America for nine seasons from 1965 to 1974.
