Dark Knight Rises Spends Second Week At Top Of UK Box Office

Dark Knight Rises has retained its position at the top of the UK box office chart for a second week in a row. In the US, the movie suffered a lower than expected box office total, which was considered to be a knock-on effect of the tragic shootings in Aurora, Denver on the opening night. A gunman opened fire in a movie theatre, at a midnight showing of Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie. In the UK though, it seems that the news - shocking though it has been - has not affected people's decisions to go to the cinema to see the movie.

Dark Knight Rises raked in £7.28 million in its second week, according to BBC News. This was a clear victory over the second place movie, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, which entered the box office chart at number two, with £1.85 million. Another animated film, Ice Age: Continental Drift slipped one place to three, after taking £1.54 million. The Amazing Spider-Man remains a strong performer, in fourth place, and averaged £1,452 per screen across 473 sites.

Dark Knight Rises also now has the accolade of being the fastest-grossing film of 2012, having taken £30 million in just 10 days. This is faster than Avengers Assemble, which took 12 days to reach the same milestone. The second highest new entry, after the Lorax, was the music documentary Searching for Sugar Man, about the Mexican-American musician Sixto Rodriguez.
