Dark Knight Rises Closes In On Imax Record
The Dark Knight Rises has become only the second film (after Avatar ) to cross the $100 million mark at IMAX theaters worldwide. IMAX announced Tuesday that as of Monday the film had taken in $65.1 million at 332 IMAX screens in North America and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens elsewhere. The film was able to push past the $100-million milestone after opening on 78 IMAX screens in China on the previous Monday, August 27. The final film of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is the only major studio film release to use IMAX cameras extensively in the production, with more than one hour of the film shot with the bulky, noisy cameras. When shown in IMAX theaters, the screen expands for those scenes, producing what IMAX calls "unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers." It was one of the rare summer blockbusters that was not also filmed in 3D.
