The Lincoln star, who was knighted last year (14), donned a cap and red gown as he attended the graduation ceremony, during which he was named a Doctor of Literature.

A statement from university bosses, reads, "Hailed as one of his generation's finest actors, Sir Daniel is an acclaimed talent... (and) has roots in south London: he grew up in Greenwich and spent his teenage years roaming the neighbourhoods around Goldsmiths with Lewisham, New Cross and Deptford among his stamping grounds."

Day-Lewis follows in the footsteps of stars including Sir Michael Caine, Timothy Spall and director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who have also been honoured by the south London institution.
