Lewis honed his skill as an actor in Bristol, in the southwest of England, at a humble drama studio. His teachers have described moments of brilliance from him, like a truly original piece in which he played a somber violin number while his opposite character painted him red. All this while his fellow students performed in-jokes and mocked the teaching staff. DDL was, even then, ahead of the curve, thinking differently and, most importantly, acting differently.

My Left Foot brought his first Oscars success. He took home best actor for his role as Christy Brown - the Irish writer and painter who had cerebral palsy. A trail of excellent performances followed, in Last of the Mohicans and Gangs of New York, before a second best actor award came his way for There Will be Blood.

By all accounts, his performance in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln seems to have enamored the critics. There are those who didn’t enjoy the film, and those who say it’s too long. Some bemoan the historical inaccuracies, but none have denied the brilliance of Daniel Day Lewis as the 16th President of The United States.
