Dancing Trips New Shows

An array of new shows entered the ratings competition Monday night, officially the first night of the new season. But it was the two-hour season premiere of ABC's Dancing with the Stars that danced away with honors as it averaged 21.01 million viewers from 8 00 p.m. to 10 00 p.m. Despite strong competition, the show outperformed last year's season opener, which drew 17.79 million viewers. At struggling NBC, The Event was not quite the event that the network was hoping for, but the drama improved considerably on last year's occupant of the 9 00 p.m. time slot, Heroes , as it attracted 11.19 million viewers. However, Chase , another new drama that followed at 10 00 p.m., drew just 7.94 million viewers. At CBS, the series premiere of the comedy Mike & Molly, which follows 2 1/2 Men , drew decent numbers -- 12.24 million viewers, down just 16 percent from Men 's 14.50 million. But the return of Hawaii Five-0 at 10 00 p.m. seemed like the work of Hawaiian kahunas as it captured 13.83 million viewers to win the time period. Over at Fox, the series premiere of Lone Star turned out to be a bust as just 4.06 million tuned in. All of the broadcast network shows also faced competition from ESPN's Monday Night Football (New Orleans Saints vs San Francisco 49ers). Ratings results for the contest are expected to be released later today (Tuesday). Meanwhile, it was reported Monday that the television debut of viral-video star Lucas Cruikshank ("Fred Figgelhorn") on Nickelodeon's Fred The Movie drew a whopping 7.6 million viewers. On Sunday HBO's Boardwalk Empire drew solid numbers as it attracted 4.8 million viewers at 9 00 and added 2.3 million more for additional plays at 10 15 p.m. and 11 30 p.m. It was the strongest series debut for any program on the pay-TV cable network since 2004.
