Cyndi Lauper - Cyndi Lauper Urges Tourists To Visit Japan
Cyndi Lauper is urging tourists to put their fears aside and revisit Japan a year on from the massive earthquake/tsunami disaster.
The singer was in the country on 11 March (11) when a huge earthquake sent a tidal wave inland, leaving more than 15,000 victims dead, and she flew back ahead of the first anniversary of the tragedy on Sunday (11Mar12).
She held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo on Monday (12Mar12) and took the opportunity to urge tourists visit the northern regions of Japan which were hit by the fallout of nuclear power sites which were damaged.
Lauper told reporters, "I just want to say to the world, please don't forget about Japan, it's very traumatic... Those people (in the northern regions) can't be isolated and cut off... They could have radiation issues but I don't think you can catch radiation by shaking somebody's hands and giving them a hug. The only way to get back up again is to include them."
The star also urged Japanese government officials to provide more information on the possible effects of the radiation, adding, "(They) should come clean with what the real deal is... When you don't know, you are fearful, and you feel powerless. Information is power."
