The singer was in the country when the 9.0-magnitude tremor struck on 11 March (11) and sent a massive tidal wave inland, leaving more than 15,000 people dead.
With the first anniversary of the disaster approaching, Lauper has made a return visit to the country and unveiled plans to raise money for ongoing relief efforts with a special concert in Tokyo a year on from the catastrophe.
The show will be screened for free in affected areas and fans elsewhere will be asked to donate money to view the gig.
In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, Lauper writes, "It has been very eventful for me in Japan... the concert on 3/11 is going to be taped and shown in movie theatres are (sic) the affected areas for free, in theatres elsewhere... money for The Red Cross will be donated from collections at the theatres for the relief fund. It is a great honour to be a part of this."
Lauper headed to a school in Sendai on Monday (05Mar12) to help out with the recovery project there, telling fans: "We are bringing baby Cherry Blossom trees. The soil is now too salty but they are going to re-soil the area. Today though as we arrive in the school the kids will receive the baby trees. It will be a ceremony. It's snowing there."
