Justin Bieber was reportedly spotted smoking weed by TMZ three days ago, since then, his young fans have been outraged by the news, and a joke reportedly made on 4Chan has gone considerably too far.

Both #cuttingforBieber and #cutforBieber have been trending today on Twitter after jokes made on 4Chan, according to Canada.com. According to them, someone on 4Chan stated: "Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because Bieber was smoking weed." The posts on 4Chan have since been deleted, but another website, Complex Music has a screenshot of the page with these comments on. However, as the website says, although the "origins are fake... the Tweet trending-and the people supporting it-are disturbingly real."

Twitter has erupted with the hashtags, but the majority are disgusted with it. Twitter users have said the following:

"I find #cutforbieber totally disrespectful for people who actually self harm. You've got no idea how much pain someone has to be in to cut."

"#cutforbieber is so disrespectful in so many ways, especially for those who deal with self harm everyday. It's not a joke and makes me sick."

"Who ever came up with the trend #cutforbieber deserves to be attacked by wild monkeys and have a nice brick to the face."

"JustinBieber has sum sick twisted fans man. Startin this whole#cuttingforbieber thing jst bcz he smoked a blunt? Where's these kids parents"

While there are a few, genuinely disturbing posts from those who seem to have taken the trend seriously, the others are users making jokes about the trend, posting photos of themselves with scissors in their hair, or a knife with a kiwi, saying "I just hope Justin likes kiwi".

This is a sobering example of the impact of the internet and popular media with users who are effectively children and vulnerable to inappropriate content.
