Cruise And Holmes Wed In La Last Week
LATEST: Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in a civil ceremony in Los Angeles last week (ends17NOV06) to ensure their union was legal prior to their wedding in Italy on Saturday (18NOV06).
The Top Gun actor and Holmes exchanged vows based on their Scientology beliefs in front of a host of celebrity guests including Will Smith, Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham and Jim Carrey at Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano.
But Scientology rites are not legally recognised in Italy so the couple took the precaution of becoming husband and wife in their native America before jetting to Europe.
Cruise's representative ARNOLD ROBINSON says, "(They) officialised their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure for Italy."
Robinson insists it is common practice for American citizens who marry overseas.
Cruise, 44, and Holmes, 27, flew to the Maldives yesterday (19NOV06) to begin their honeymoon.
