Critics Find Hfpa's The Tourist Nod Laughable

The decision by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to nominate The Tourist for a best film Golden Globe award and its two stars in the acting categories was derided almost as much as the film itself was by critics and moviegoers alike over the past weekend. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the announcement of the nominations "drew audible laughter" from the reporters covering the announcement. The Associated Press said that Jolie also laughed when she heard it, saying, "We were laughing because it's the first time that I've been in the comedic category so it's new for me." Who, other than the HFPA members, even knew that The Tourist was a comedy? In today's (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times , columnist Patrick Goldstein commented, "The only comedy category it belongs in is one reserved for movies full of unintentional humor." Seattle film critic Moira Macdonald remarked, "The nomination of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp for their performances in The Tourist has less to do with their work than with wanting the glamorous duo to show up" for the awards show. In the London Independent, critic Geoffrey Macnab called The Tourist nods "baffling," The New York Post 's Lou Lumenick referred to the HFPA as "the Hollywood Freeloaders Association" and noted, as other critics had, the absence of the Coen brothers' True Grit from the list. He suggested that the snub may have resulted from the fact that the other studios "gave nicer banquets than the one for True Grit. "
