Despite being considered the 'star' of Cougar Town, Courteney Cox feels that the success of any good sitcom relies on an ensemble cast; the same thing that made Friends such a massive global success. Speaking to Alicia Rancilio of Associated Press, Cox said "I think all successful shows are ensembles. It seems like you have to be supported by somebody. You can't just come out and do a one-man show.'' Cougar Town initially began as a show centered around Cox's character dating younger men, but soon evolved into a show that focused on her character, Jules' relationship with her friends as much as anything else.
In the interview, with her co-star Josh Hopkins, Cox explained that some of the show's fans have been confused about the show's future and whether or not it will be returning: We have to remind people that it's coming back on,'' Cox says. "And we have to let people know that it's not a show about cougars. It's a show about adult friendships."
Cox and her co-stars have reportedly been attending viewing parties with fans of the show and trying to engage with their audience. For Valentine's day, Courteney even launched a competition via her Twitter page, offering a free bottle of red wine to any couple who agreed to stay home and watch Cougar Town for their Valentine's date. "It's been really important for us to get out and support the show, and we have heartily," said Josh Hopkins. Last night's Valentine's airing (February 14, 2012) was the debut episode of the show's third season.
