Controversial Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps has died at the age of 84.
The outspoken religious extremist passed away on Wednesday (19Mar14) at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka, Kansas, according to his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper.
Phelps founded the church, which regular stages protests at the funerals and concerts of celebrities who promote homosexuality, in 1955.
The group is also infamous for staging events at soldiers' funerals, coining the phrase, 'God Hates F**s,' and in 1998, Phelps led protesters outside the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a student whose sexuality cost him his life.
Earlier this week (begs17Mar14), Phelps' son Nate hit the headlines when he announced plans to protest outside Lorde's Missouri concert on Friday (21Mar14).
The church leaders have also threatened to set up picket lines at Paul Walker's funeral and Lady Gaga's concerts in the past.
