Conservative Documentary To Get Big Expansion Next Weekend
Dinesh D'Souza's 2016 Obama's America will expand to about 1,600 theaters next weekend, up from 1,091 last weekend when it surprisingly earned more money on a per-theater basis than any other film. "There are a lot of areas where this movie isn't even showing," D'Souza told Advertising Age. "I'm just thrilled to see how the film is striking a chord." Although D'Souza told the trade publication that about $7.5 million has been spent so far to market the film, ticket sales have undoubtedly been boosted by endorsements from several conservative talk-show hosts, including Rush Limbaugh, who urged his listeners to see it. "This movie is going gangbusters!" he said on Friday. "The Hollywood press is writing about this in a shocked and dismayed way." Shock and dismay was also registered by Kyle Smith, the conservative film critic for the New York Post , who wrote on his blog, "These numbers are amazing for an unheralded documentary. It stands a chance of becoming a real cultural phenomenon." He then added, "My question for the film's distributor Why didn't you send me a copy?"
