Composer Brooks Reaches Legal Settlement With Ex-fiancee
Shamed Oscar-winning songwriter JOSEPH BROOKS has settled a lawsuit with his ex-fiancee JOALY GOMEZ after he accused her of fraud for hiding the fact she was already married.
The You Light Up My Life composer, 71, proposed to 23-year-old Gomez in May (09) but soon discovered she was already the wife of Miguel Cruz, who she wed in January 2007. She maintained Brooks knew she wasn't single.
He sued her in October (09) for $2 million (£1.25 million) in damages and the return of gifts including a $60,000 (£37,500) engagement ring and a $70,000 (£43,750) Mercedes-Benz car.
But the former couple reached an agreement in late December (09) and the settlement was approved by a New York judge.
The terms of the deal have not been made public.
The settlement is one less legal mess Brooks has to deal with - the songwriter is currently awaiting trial on charges of rape and sexual abuse.
He was arrested and charged in June (09) with sexually assaulting 11 women who answered online adverts for acting roles.
