The 75-year-old comedian and character actor died on Thursday morning (28May15), due to complications from a stroke he suffered last year (14).

His manager tells TMZ.com he fell ill in January (15), and he was in hospital for treatment when he died.

Rey began his career as an acting teacher, but stepped into the spotlight as a stand-up comedian, touring with R&B group The O'Jays.

He branched out into TV and film, snagging roles in movies like White Men Can't Jump, Harlem Nights and House Party 3, but he's perhaps best known for playing Red's Father in hit 1995 film Friday, starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker.

Rey also appeared in hit U.S. TV shows including The Bernie MAC Show, The Wayans Bros. and 227, in which he had a recurring role as Ray the Mailman.
