On Thursday (16Jul15), a jury in Denver convicted 27-year-old James Holmes, who dreamed up and then carried out a sick movie theatre midnight massacre, killing 12 film-goers and injuring 70 more.

After a lengthy trial, the jurors rejected arguments from Holmes' defence team that the former neuroscience graduate student was insane and suffered from schizophrenia.

The jury took almost 13 hours to review a total of 165 crimes, including 24 counts of first-degree murder, before delivering the verdict.

The same panel will now enter a second phase in the case to decide if Holmes will face the death penalty. That part of the trial is expected to take up to two months.
