Coldplay - Coldplay Beat Kelly Clarkson To Top Billboard Chart
Coldplay fended off stiff competition from Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble to top the Billboard Chart with their new album 'Mylo Xyloto' this week. The record sold 447,000 copies in the United States, significantly less than their previous two releases but enough to secure the top spot, reports the New York Times.
The band was helped by heavy promotion of the record on iTunes and a marketing campaign that included a live concert stream on YouTube and Vevo. The album has topped the charts around the world, also taking the No.1 spot in 17 other countries including the UK, France, South Africa, South Korea and Mexico. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Mylo Xyloto has also set the record for the highest first week album sales ever on the iTunes store - a milestone the band first achieved in 2008 with 'Viva La Vida'. Elsewhere in the charts, veteran songwriter Tom Waits reached the Top 10 for the very first time, while Rihanna secured her 11th No. 1 single with new track 'We Found Love'. To further promote the new album, Coldplay will be musical guests on Saturday Night Live on 12th November 2011, with actress Emma Stone hosting the show. The band will then appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on 7th December.
Lead singer Chris Martin will also appear on The Howard Stern show next Wednesday (9th November 2011).
