Coachella Organisers Announce 'Festival At Sea', All The Details

18 July 2012

The organisers of Coachella have unleashed a new event, unlike anything else they have done before. Branded 'S.S. Coachella,' this new venture will see the festival organisers sending a load of bands and, of course, a whole host of music fans, out to sea on a cruise ship. A festival at sea, if you will. So far, two trips have been planned for this December; one to the Bahamas and one to Jamaica, with both journeys starting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The acts already confirmed to play the unusual event include Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells and Warpaint, in keeping with Coachella Festival's usual musical style. The tickets, which will open for reservation on Saturday July 21, start at $500 but according to the Los Angeles Times, extend into the thousands. The Bahamas cruise will set sail on December 16, 2012, returning three days later. The Jamaica leg will depart December 19, 2012 and is set to return just in time for Christmas, on December 23.

The cruise ship festival will see the promoter Goldenvoice using the Coachella name away from their annual desert festival for the first time and marks a significant step in the progress of the promoter's influence. It might not be the first time that music events have taken place on cruise ships, but it will quite probably be one of the most widely publicized events of its kind. Weezer recently embarked on the idea, as have Kiss and KID ROCK.
