The Penguins singer Cleveland Duncan has died at the age of 77.

Duncan passed away on 7 November (12) in Los Angeles, but no further details surrounding his death were available as Wenn went to press.

The singer's soaring tenor voice took the quartet into the spotlight with 1954 smash hit Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine), which went on to sell more than one million copies.

The Penguins failed to achieve further chart success, but Duncan went on to enjoy a hit track with Memories of El Monte, written by Frank Zappa and Ray Collins in 1963.
