Clark Kent Quits Daily Planet; Lois Lane Doesn't

The newspaper business has lost arguably its most famous reporter. Clark Kent has quit The Daily Planet. As reported by Jim Romanesko, Kent's resignation comes in the next issue of the Superman comic book (Superman #13), and, Romanesko observes, he doesn't go quietly. Appearing in front of the staff of the paper, which has been taken over by Galaxy Broadcasting Corp. (in real life, Superman publisher DC comics was taken over by Time Warner in 1989), Kent delivers what today's (Tuesday) New York Daily News calls an Aaron Sorkin-style sermon on the media. The forever-27-year-old Kent tells them, I've been a journalist for barely five years now. Why am I the one sounding like a grizzled ink-stained wretch who believes news should be about -- I don't know, NEWS? A DC Comics spokesman observed, This is not the first time in DC Comics history that Clark Kent has left the Planet, and this time the resignation reflects present-day issues -- the balance of journalism vs. entertainment, the role of new media, the rise of the citizen journalist, etc. In an interview with USA Today, new Superman writer Scott Lobdell explained: Rather than Clark be this clownish suit that Superman puts on, we're going to really see Clark come into his own in the next few years as far as being a guy who takes to the Internet and to the airwaves and starts speaking an unvarnished truth. But Oliver Willis, a research fellow at the liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America, tweeted, It doesn't seem @dccomics has any idea wtf to do with Superman. Flailing.
