Michael Jackson - Cirque Du Soleil Performance Falls Flat: Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

The Cirque Du Soleil have brought their ambitious Michael Jackson dance tribute to London’s O2 Arena.

All the signifiers for a unique and stellar performance are there: the classic, era-defining songs of the King of Pop, coupled with the choreography and jaw-dropping talents of one of the world’s most impressive dance troupes. So why are the reviews not looking so great?

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour opened on Friday (October 12, 2012) at London’s O2 Arena but reviews for the performance have been less than congratulatory. Perhaps Jackson’s music doesn’t lend itself so well to Cirque Du Soleil’s trademark acrobatics, which appear to have been usurped in favour of “a series of Covent Garden-standard mimes, predictably lost in an arena.” The Evening Standard’s reviewer had a muted response to the show, evidently disappointed and remarked that “Tellingly, after two hours of the most danceable music imaginable, none of the crowd were out of their seats. Still, at least no children were involved.”

The Independent were also left wanting: “it never exploded into the magnificent monster of spectacle that it might have been… The venue was to blame, at least in part…to stage this blend of dance, theatre and acrobatics in the arena was the equivalent of throwing a bucket of cold water over any fireworks it was hoping to set off. Performers who might have worked wonders on the rotunda stage of the Royal Albert Hall – Cirque's usual home – looked like small, insubstantial figures. Even the immense screen could not dominate the space.” Jackson fans that had once hoped to see the King of Pop perform at the O2 will sadly not find this to be an adequate replacement.

I guess since your article was in 2012 and now it's 2013 and this show is booming all over the world, you can stop this lie! Anything that you can write negatively about Michael Jackson whether it's his name or his mother and kids and even this BS! Maybe you ought to use GOOGLE to get your facts about this man straight!!

Because the reviews that are not so great are made by people who are a bunch of morons full of jealousy. The show is amazing, they are just poor losers.

I have read that they changed the format for the opening night to be more ‘Michael’ than the usual run; this also comes with the news that they could not bring, (Ship)? Some of the usual props over – one being the Giving Tree – and less dancers performing in this run! And now, the show looks and sounds different in such a vast arena? If all the above are true and Cirque have read the reviews thus far – they really will have to do something here. It appears to have been doing great in the US. This is a shame. However, one or two review articles on Immortal have been mentioning the Beatles, LOVE and Viva Elvis in comparison and I find that a strange thing to do, to be honest. Fact is, Viva Elvis closed down due to poor attendance. Also, Immortal was the number 1 show at one time. It was doing very well in America. I know that shipping is a slow form of transport regarding props, but it sounds like the venue is also too vast – swallowing up the whole thing – then, having less performers perform….well…. I just hope they are able to work something out to help bring some of the magic that appears to have got lost, back. The star is not here, so they have to try double hard to impress. Really hope it works out okay. I do hope to see it sometime after it opens in Vegas! Sweet dreams, Michael X

So the problem seems to be the O2, not the Cirque De Soleil. I saw this show and it was the best show I have ever seen and hope it returns. Since MJ's last performance was suppose the be there maybe the fans there can't wrap their brains around anything that is not the genuine things. These dancer and the performance itself is at the top of list when it comes to anything imaginable that represents the life of the artist and if the fans in Britain has a problem with enjoying one of the best performances that can be done for a person like the King of Pop. then that their loss!!
