Christopher Plummer Homes In On First Oscar, Aged 82

Christopher Plummer, the much-loved actor best known for playing the captain with seven children in The Sound of Music, looks set to win his first Oscar on Sunday (February 26, 2012). The veteran has stormed this year's awards season with his career-best performance in indie-flick 'Beginners'.

Plummer has starred in almost 200 movies and television shows, and plenty of stage productions. The Canadian actor certainly has stiff competition for the Supporting Actor Oscar, though should pull through for his performances as a 75-year-old father who turns gay after a long marriage, though swiftly succumbs to terminal cancer. Writing for Deadline.com, movie writer Pete Hammond said, "Christopher Plummer is the sentimental favorite. It would be a huge upset if anybody but Christopher Plummer were to take this home, and it is only his second Oscar nomination, so he is way overdue". Plummer's closest rival for the statuette is Swedish-born actor Max Von Sydow, who has mounted a strong challenge for his performance as an elderly World War Two survivor in 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'. Though it's nominated for Best Picture, the film has been ripped apart by critics and Sydow could be its only hope. Plummer missed out on an Oscar in 2010 for his performance as Leo Tolstoy in 'The Last Station', though he claims 'Beginners' was the most fun he's every had on camera, saying, "I enjoy being different as much as I can be, but this was different on a very simple, human level. I have never had such a relaxed and good time playing anything on screen. It was an enchanting story".

If he does go on to scoop the Oscar on Sunday - Plummer won't have time to celebrate, having signed up to star in the drama 'Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight', about the boxer's battles with the US government.
