The stars were celebrated by their peers at the London ceremony, but were unable to collect their prizes in person at the Savoy Theatre.

The accolade for Best New Opera Production went to producers at the Birmingham Opera Company for their staging of Khovanskygate, an adaptation of Khovanshchina by Russian composer Mussorgsky, while Britain's Richard Jones claimed the Best Director honour and Russia's Semyon Bychkov was feted as Best Conductor.

Other winners included Speight Jenkins, the former general director of the Seattle Opera, who was presented with a lifetime achievement award, officials at Berlin's Komische Oper, who were named Best Opera Company, and Austria's Bregenz Festival, which was named Best Festival.
