Chris Lighty: Memorial Service Attracts Hip Hop Giants
Following his tragic death, the memorial service for Chris Lighty saw celebrity friends arrive in their dozens to pay their respects. Sean Combs, Fat Joe, Rev. Run, Missy Elliott, Michael Bivins, Wyclef Jean and Ed Love all graced the Manhattan funeral home, Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel. Lighty had been prominent on the hip-hop scene for decades, working with 50 Cent, singers like Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill, celebrities like Gayle King and Nick Cannon, and other rap moguls like Andre Harrell, Lyor Cohen and Mona Scott-Young. "You were the light in a lot of lives," said Busta. "It ain't no coincidence that your last name was Lighty." LL Cool J, another man who enjoyed a close working relationship with Lighty, also had kind words. "He grew up to be in so many ways a true leader in our hip hop world," he explained. "We didn't thank him enough. I know I didn't."
Lighty committed suicide following a heated argument with his wife, Veronica Lighty. "We had a passionate relationship," the 36-year-old widow said. "We fought all the time." The death, she explained, was not because of their falling out. The Associated Press, reported that Lighty still owed more than $330,000 in state and federal taxes and was sued in April by City National Bank for not addressing his account, which was overdrawn to the sum of $53,584.
