Chris De Burgh - Chris De Burgh Abandons Iran Concerts Plan

Singer Chris De Burgh has abandoned his plans for a series of concerts in Iran and vowed to boycott the country until its ruling regime is ousted.

The Lady in Red hitmaker was set to become the first Western pop star to perform in the Islamic republic but his rumoured gig in 2008 failed to go ahead because he had no work permit.

De Burgh has now revealed he was preparing to schedule up to 10 concerts in the capital city Tehran last year (11) but cancelled his plans after the controversial re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The singer/songwriter is also adamant it would be too dangerous for him to return to Iran - where he has a huge following - under the current regime but has pledged to head back once its political make-up changes.

He tells Sky News, "At the moment, unfortunately, because I have very strong feelings about the current regime, particularly what everybody now agrees was the fraudulent election of Ahmadinejad and what happened subsequently and what's happened to the protesters... No, (I could) absolutely not (perform there).

"I don't think I would be safe, to be honest - I'm a vocal critic of what's going on over there at the moment... What I am doing is tiny compared to what the politicians are trying to achieve with the whole thing, but one day I will return."
