Chris Brown Cleans Up At American Music Awards

by | 24 November 2008

US R 'n' B star Chris Brown was the major winner at the American Music Awards (AMAs), claiming three trophies.

The Forever singer was named best male soul/R 'n' B artist and best male pop/rock artist at the Los Angeles ceremony.

His biggest success came in the artist of the year category, in which Brown overcame chart-topping rapper Lil Wayne, songstress Alicia Keys, reunited rockers the Eagles and four-times nominated Coldplay.

"I don't know what to say. I would have given it to Coldplay," said Brown after taking the award.

Kanye West took the best male rap/hip-hop artist award but said fellow nominee Lil Wayne was the more deserving winner.

"I want to give this award to Wayne," he explained. "If it was last year it would have been my award."

West also won the best rap/hip-hop album award for Graduation, and said his new effort 808s and Heartbreak was an attempt to break through musical boundaries.

"It's our responsibility as musicians to push music to the point it was in the 60s and 70s," he commented. "I want to be Elvis."

Show host Jimmy Kimmel quipped: "Elvis died on the toilet with half a jelly doughnut in his mouth. You may want to rethink that."

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who duetted with Brown on No Air, took the adult contemporary music award while Carrie Underwood took the best country album prize.

And to mark a successful night for American Idol contestants, Daughtry followed his three trophies in 2007 with the best pop/rock group gong.

Other winners included Alicia Keys, whose As I Am album was rewarded in the pop/rock and soul/R 'n B categories, and Rihanna, who took the best female prizes for pop/rock and soul/R 'n' B.
