The real winner of the weekend box office was Jessica Chastain. It's hard to imagine a career booster any greater than having your name on the marquee for both the No. 1 and No. 2 films at the box office. But there it was -- for Mama, a $15-million dollar horror flick that wound up earning more than $33 million on its opening weekend, and for Zero Dark Thirty, which earned $18.7 million in its fifth weekend. The success of those two films was largely responsible for pushing the overall box office up 7 percent from the same weekend last year, when Underworld Awakening was tops with $25.3 million.
The top ten films for the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures for Mama and Les MisÃ©rables are final):
