Chastain Shines In Two Films Over Mlk Holiday

The real winner of the weekend box office was Jessica Chastain. It's hard to imagine a career booster any greater than having your name on the marquee for both the No. 1 and No. 2 films at the box office. But there it was -- for Mama, a $15-million dollar horror flick that wound up earning more than $33 million on its opening weekend, and for Zero Dark Thirty, which earned $18.7 million in its fifth weekend. The success of those two films was largely responsible for pushing the overall box office up 7 percent from the same weekend last year, when Underworld Awakening was tops with $25.3 million.

The top ten films for the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures for Mama and Les Misérables are final):
1. Mama, Universal, $33,034,560; 2. Zero Dark Thirty, Sony, $18,700,000; 3. Silver Linings Playbook, Weinstein Co. $13,019,000; 4. Gangster Squad, Warner Bros. $10,305,000; 5. A Haunted House, Open Road Films, $9,700,000; 6. Broken City, Fox, $9,500,000; 7. Les Misérables, Universal, $9,245,715; 8. Django Unchained, Weinstein Co. $9,235,000; 9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Warner Bros. $7,715,000; 10. The Last Stand, Lionsgate, $7,215,000.
