Charlotte Church - Charlotte Church Awarded Damages Over Proposal Story
Singer Charlotte Church accepted substantial undisclosed libel damages on Wednesday (25Jul12) after a false story alleging she drunkenly proposed to her boyfriend was published in a British newspaper.
Editors at Sunday tabloid The People suggested Church asked Jonathan Powell to marry her during a boozy karaoke evening in Cardiff, Wales last October (11), but she was performing at a concert venue five miles away at the time.
Bosses at the newspaper's publishers, Mirror Group Newspapers, have since agreed the story was untrue and have issued an apology to the star.
Church was not present for the hearing at London's High Court on Wednesday but Mike Brookes, a lawyer acting on the singer's behalf, says, "For the avoidance of doubt, Charlotte was not publicly or otherwise drunk at the event, did not require any help into her car, did not order a bottle of champagne each for herself and Jonathan, and did not propose to him.
"Charlotte brought this claim because the defamatory allegation that she had made a drunken spectacle of herself whilst making a proposal of marriage hurt her and caused her distress and embarrassment with her friends and family, not least which (sic) included Jonathan."
