Frank Ocean - 'Channel Orange' Lands GLAAD Award For Frank Ocean

17 January 2013

Frank Ocean has been nominated for a GLAAD award, for his album Channel Orange.

Last year, Ocean made a statement regarding his sexuality, just prior to the release of his debut album. In the statement, the Odd Future collaborator revealed that his first love was with another man. The statement was well-received in the hip-hop community, which has a reputation for its underlying homophobia, in many sectors.

R&B star Beyonce and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears were amongst those who lent their support to Ocean and now, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation have given the singer / songwriter the nod for his acclaimed album. According to the BBC, he faces competition from Scissor Sisters, Gossip and Adam Lambert in the Outstanding Music category, as part of the awards which aim to recognise positive representation of gay, bisexual and transgender people in the media. Other nominees in the awards include the movies Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Cloud Atlas and the Perks of Being A Wallflower. In the television category, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and Glee were all given a nod.

This year’s GLAAD awards – the 24th since they began – will be announced in a series of galas which will take place between March and May, encompassing a number of cities, including New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
