Celeste Holm - Celeste Holm, Oscar Winning Actress, Dies Aged 95

Celeste Holm, the much-loved character actress who scooped an Oscar in 1947, has died aged 95. Her niece Amy Phillips told Cnn that Holm had been admitted to a New York hospital last week, but that her husband had taken her home this past Friday (July 13, 2012).
Phillips explained, "She passed peacefully in her home in her own bed with her husband and friends and family nearby". A New Yorker born and bred, Holm began performing as a teenager in school plays and later in college, before taking up acting professionally. Her first major role came in the 1940 revival of 'The Time of Your Life', co-starring Gene Kelly, and she later gained widespread recognition for playing Ado Annie in 'Oklahoma!'. Like many theater actresses of the time, Holm moved to Hollywood, where she won a role in 'Gentleman's Agreement' - subsequently scooping the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The 1947 movie starring Gregory Peck follows a reporter who pretends to be Jewish in order to cover a story on anti-Semitism, only to discover the true depths of the bigotry and hatred of the time. Her Academy Award led Holm to bigger roles, and she mastered both the stage and screen in the years after her win. Eventually, she settled into television roles and starred in the likes of 'Fantasy Island', 'Falcon Crest' and 'Archie Bunker's Place' throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Two of the actress' final projects will be released in 2013 - the comedy 'College Debts', and romantic drama 'Driving Me Crazy'.
