Celebrity Chefs Criticised For 'Fatty' Dishes

by | 12 March 2009

Television chefs including Rick Stein, Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson have been attacked for creating dishes high in saturated fat.

A new report by dietary committee the Fat Panel found that cookbooks from some of most popular chefs on TV are filled with recipes which could encourage healthy eating.

Many of the dishes were found to contain more than the recommended daily amount of saturated fat - 30g for men and 20g for women - in a single serving.

Anthony Worrall Thompson was labelled "ambivalent" to the issue off saturated fat content in his recipes while both Stein and John Burton Race were said to be "keen to use high saturated fat ingredients constantly".

Dishes by Ramsay, his wife Tana, Lawson and Jean-Christophe Novelli were also criticised for their high saturated fat content though Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver were said to have a "balanced view" towards healthy eating.

The report called for fans of the celebrity chefs to make simple changes to recipes - such as swapping butter and cream for margarine and yoghurt - to reduce the saturated fat content without affecting the flavour of the meal.

Sian Porter, a registered dietician on The Fat Panel, said: "Having a celeb chef treat is one thing but eating these dishes as they stand regularly could bump up your saturated fat intake considerably.

"Many chefs are making headway in creating healthier dishes, but there is still some way to go.

"On average, we are each eating 20 per cent too much saturated fat. Simple steps to cut down on the amount of saturated fat, such as adapting recipes by swapping less healthy ingredients and using healthier cooking methods, could potentially save thousands of lives and years of living with heart disease."
