Celebrities Reach Kilimanjaro Peak

The group of nine Comic Relief celebrities who decided to scale Mount Kilimanjaro for charity has reached the summit of Africa's highest mountain.

Writing on the Comic Relief blog, the band of music, radio and television stars all said they were in pain at the end of the trek due to the extreme temperatures and thin air on their way to the peak.

The first group consisting of Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, presenter Fearne Cotton, performer Denise Van Outen and GMTV host Ben Shephard reached the top of Kilimanjaro first just as dawn broke.

Writing on the team's blog, the celebrities wrote: "Cheryl for one has already said she's never done anything so mentally and physically demanding and I doubt anyone in the team will disagree.

"A temperature of minus 15 and air so thin your lungs positively burn with disappointment every time you take a breath means you can't stop long."

They were followed by Cheryl's bandmate Kimberly Walsh, former Boyzone singer Ronan Keating and Take That star Gary Barlow who were said to be in "agony" at the end of the charity climb.

Radio star Chris Moyles and pop star Alesha Dixon were the final celebrities to reach the summit with the Comic Relief blog saying Dixon was in "severe pain" at the end.

Several members of the group suffered from altitude sickness and sleepless nights as they made their way up the mountain over the last five days.

A total of £1.4 million has been raised for charity through the celebrities' efforts.
