Jorge Mario Bergoglio - Catholic Cardinals Choose Jorge Bergoglio As 266th Pope
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina has been named the new Pope.
White smoke billowed out of The Vatican's Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday evening (13Mar13) signifying a new pontiff had been chosen.
The new pope greeted the masses crammed into St. Peter's Square from the balcony of St. Peter's Basillica just over an hour after the smoke first appeared - at 8.20pm local time in Rome.
Bergoglio, 76, replaces Pope Benedict Xvi, who became the first Catholic Church leader to resign in 600 years last month (Feb13), citing failing health.
The new leader of the church will be known as Pope Francis.
Bergoglio becomes the first pope from the Americas.
