Carole King - Carole King To Receive Gershwin Prize Honour

Legendary singer/songwriter Carole King has been given another reason to celebrate this Christmas (12) - she has been named the 2013 recipient of the U.S. Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

The star, who has scored hits with tracks including You've Got a Friend, So Far Away, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and Will You Love Me Tomorrow, will be feted for her lifetime achievements at a special tribute concert with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. in the spring (13).

Library of Congress representative James H. Billington says, "Carole King has been one of the most influential songwriters of our time.

"For more than five decades, she has written for and been recorded by many different types of artists for a wide range of audiences, communicating with beauty and dignity the universal human emotions of love, joy, pain and loss. Her body of work reflects the spirit of the Gershwin Prize with its originality, longevity and diversity of appeal."

King joins a small, elite group of songwriters to land the accolade - only Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul MCCartney and duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David have previously been honoured for their excellence.

The 70 year old is flattered to receive the prestigious accolade, stating, "I was so pleased when the venerable Library of Congress began honouring writers of popular songs with the Gershwin Prize. I'm proud to be the fifth such honoree and the first woman among such distinguished company. I look forward to performing in the nation's capital."

King, already a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is on a career high - earlier this month (Dec12), she unveiled a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was saluted by singers including Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Vince Gill and John Legend at the celebrity-packed Celebration of Carole King & Her Music show in Los Angeles. Then, on Wednesday (12Dec12), she was also announced among the Lifetime Achievement honourees at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
