Carey: Aereo May Force Fox Off Airwaves, Onto Cable
News Corp President Chase Carey on Monday threatened to shut down Fox Broadcasting and turn it into a cable-only network if the courts reject the broadcast networks' efforts to shut down Barry Diller's Aereo service. Last week a federal appeals court rejected broadcasters' demands for an injunction to halt the continued operation of Aereo saying that they had not demonstrated that they are likely to prevail on the merits on this claim in their copyright infringement action. Broadcasters claim that Aereo, which uses thousands of tiny antennas to transmit broadcast signals to individual users over the Internet, could cause them to lose billions of dollars in revenue from retransmission-consent fees. We have no choice but to develop business solutions that ensure we continue to remain in the driver's seat of our own destiny. One option could be converting the Fox broadcast network to a pay channel, which we would do in collaboration with both our content partners and affiliates, Carey told the National Association of Broadcasters on Monday.
