Captain America Triumphs Over Harry In America

Just as it had during another war with Great Britain -- one that no doubt cost far less than the current one -- America returned from crushing defeat last weekend to win the latest weekend at the box office in spectacular fashion. Paramount's Captain America The First Avenger blew past the U.K.-produced Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to wind up with $65.06 million, versus Potter 's $47.42 million. Total box-office sales for the weekend came to $181.32 million, up almost 17 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when Inception led in its second week with $42.73 million, followed by the debut of Salt with $36.01 million. Nevertheless, it did little to affect the overall numbers for the year. Despite far more films carrying 3D surcharges, revenue is down 6.4 percent for the year against 2010, while attendance is down 7.8 percent.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1.
