Campion Slams Misogynistic Movie Business

Director JANE CAMPION has launched a stinging attack on the movie industry, insisting it's unfairly "controlled" by men. The moviemaker was honoured onstage at the Cannes Film Festival in France yesterday (20May07), alongside nearly 30 other major directors. However, when asked to explain why she thought she was the only female of the group, Campion confessed she found the film industry riddled with misogyny. She said, "I just think this is the way the world is, that men control the money, and they decide who they're going to give it to." Campion is the only female filmmaker to have won Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, for The Piano in 1993. Of the 22 movies in the running for this year's (07) prize, only three were made by women.
