Cameron Happy With Brazilian Dam Delay

Director JAMES CAMERON is celebrating after winning his fight to delay the construction of a hydro-electric dam in Brazil's Amazon rainforest.
Cameron and his Avatar star Sigourney Weaver have both lent their support to a campaign against the megastructure, known as the Belo Monte project.
They staged a press conference on Monday (12Apr10) where they told the Brazilian media the dam would have a damaging affect on the Amazon's indigenous population.
On Thursday (15Apr10), a judge in Brazil stalled the project by suspending the bidding among contractors - and Cameron insists the ruling is a small victory in an ongoing fight for the Amazon Indians.
He says, "(It's) a real Avatar battle in the Amazon. It's personal now because I know these people who will be affected."
Government officials have vowed to appeal the ruling - and Weaver warns there is still a struggle ahead to convince authorities to call off plans for the dam.
She tells the Associated Press, "We haven't stopped it. We postponed it. There needs to be more dialogue and the indigenous people need to be included."
Rocker Sting has been protesting plans for the dam since 1989, when he joined the indigenous leader Raoni Metyktire to oppose a hydro-electric project on the Amazon's Xingu River.
