Cameron Claims He Wouldn't Mind Being Brunt Of Oscar Skit
Avatar director James Cameron insists he would not have been offended if producers had allowed a sketch featuring Sacha Baron Cohen as a pregnant Na'vi to remain in the telecast. "I don't produce the Oscars," Cameron told E! Online Wednesday. "If they want to poke fun at Avatar Sunday, that's OK by me." The sketch, which apparently was to feature Baron Cohen as the Na'vi descending the stage and accusing Cameron of knocking "her" up, was reportedly nixed by producer Bill Mechanic, who was head of 20th Century Fox while Cameron was making Titanic and feared that Cameron would become offended and walk out of the theater. But E! Online said that Cameron told it that "jokes are just another element of Hollywood's big night" and that even "the gaffes and out-of-bounds stuff are all part of the fun." On the Los Angeles Times website, entertainment columnist Patrick Goldstein commented, "Once again, the academy has settled for timidity over some refreshing comic tumult."
