James - Cajun Singer Croker Dies
Cajun singer James 'Glen' Croker has died at the age of 77.
The Hackberry Ramblers frontman passed away in Lake Charles, Louisiana on Tuesday (23Aug11). He had been suffering ill health for years and his family believes he suffered a heart attack, according to his bandmate and group manager Ben Sandmel.
Croker began singing with the band in 1959 and also played guitar. They garnered a Grammy nomination in the best traditional/folk album category for their 1997 release Deep Water and last performed in 2005.
Sandmel says of his pal, "His swaggering, soulful style and use of electronic amplification brought the Ramblers a post-war, honky-tonk tinge that added blues, RnB, rockabilly, and classic country songs to their already-diverse repertoire. He will be sorely missed."
Croker is survived by his wife Nell, two sons, two daughters, three step-children and several grandchildren.
