Bruce Springsteen Makes Surprise Appearance To Remember Norway Tragedy
Anders Behring Breivik, 33, bombed a government building in Oslo, killing eight people, and went a shooting rampage on 22 July (11) that left 69 dead at Norway's Labour Party youth camp on Utoya island.
Politicians, royals and survivors of the 2011 massacre came together over the weekend (21-22Jul12) to remember the victims, and Sunday's anniversary memorials ended with a concert in Oslo's City Square.
A number of local artists performed at the gig, but the crowd was given a big surprise when Springsteen took to the stage with E-Street Band member Steve Van Zandt.
The Boss played protest song We Shall Overcome to the audience of more than 60,000 and told the crowd, "Steve and I are honoured to be included here tonight. For all of us who love democracy and tolerance, it's an international tragedy."
Breivik has admitted the killings and his trial came to an end last month (Jun12). He awaits a verdict on whether he should be declared criminally sane and sentenced to prison, or be sent to a closed psychiatric ward.
Five Oslo court judges will give their verdict on 24 August (12).
