Brown Sweeps The Board At American Music Awards

Brown won Favourite Male Artist in the categories of Pop/Rock and Soul/R+B at the event at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre.

His rumoured girlfriend Rihanna matched his wins - scoring victories in the same categories, for Favourite Female Artist.

The With You hitmaker went on to beat Keys, Lil' Wayne, the Eagles and Coldplay for Artist of the Year - modestly insisting the British band was more worthy of the honour, saying, "I would have gave it to Coldplay. I'm at a loss for words."

West scored his first-ever AMAs victories in two first-time categories at the award show, beating mentor Jay-Z and southern rapper Lil' Wayne to win Favourite Rap/Hip-Hip Album for 2007's Graduation.

West also scooped the Favourite Male Artist gong - but offered the award to Lollipop hitmaker Lil' Wayne during his acceptance speech: "I really appreciate these two awards but I've got to say I'm a fan of music, so and I've got my opinion and I want to give this award to (Lil') Wayne for this year. If it was last year, this would've been my award. We'll see what happens next year."

R+B singer Alicia Keys was another top winner, walking away with Favourite Album in the Pop/Rock and Soul/R+B categories.

Taking the stage to accept her awards, she applauded her fellow artists, adding, "I'm so proud to be here tonight for all of the diversity in music that's represented here, there's something for everyone... We have a brand new president, there are new changes in the world and there's nothing we can't do."

The 36th Annual AMAs - which saw performances by artists including Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo and Rihanna and Coldplay - was hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel. Britney Spears, who was rumoured to be making a surprise stage appearance, didn't attend the ceremony.
