Britney's Stay 'To Be Extended'

by | 03 February 2008

Britney Spears' stay in hospital is to be extended by 14 days, according to US media reports.

The 26-year-old was taken by Los Angeles police to the UCLA medical centre on Thursday in what appeared to be an attempt to forcibly provide her with care after high-profile problems.

And according to celebrity news web site TMZ.com, the Toxic star will be held at the UCLA medical centre in Los Angeles for a further fortnight.

Reports from the US suggest the star has been sectioned to ensure she receives treatment for her condition, believed to be a severe bipolar disorder.

The ward to which Spears has been admitted is renowned as one of the best in the US for treating the disorder.

It is believed she was admitted to the hospital under a 5150 psychiatric hold, which means she poses a danger to herself and others.

Her father James was yesterday given temporary control of her estate, with superior court commissioner Reva Goetz also issuing a restraining order against the singer's manager and confidante Sam Lufti.

Spears has rarely been out of the headlines this year, with her highly-public custody battle with former husband Kevin Federline a source of numerous news stories.

She was previously hospitalised on January 3rd after police were called to her Los Angeles home when she apparently refused to allow sons Jayden James, one, and Sean Preston, two, to be taken by her father as planned.

On that occasion Spears was released within 48 hours but she lost custody of her children as a result.

According to E! Online, Spears' English boyfriend Adnan Ghalib, a photographer, was seen visiting the hospital in the same car as her mother and her mother's friend Jackie.

The singer's father Jamie Spears, manager Sam Lufti and friend Alli Sims were also said to have gone to the hospital after she was admitted.

As well as her ongoing battle with Federline, Spears has also been in the news for shaving her head and going out without any underwear in recent months.
