Bret Michaels Thought He'd Been Shot
Bret Michaels' though he had been shot by a burglar when he suffered a haemorrhage.
Bret Michaels' brain haemorrhage felt like he had been shot.
The Poison frontman said he thought he had been shot in the back of the head by a burglar when he suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage - bleeding at the base of his brain - on April 21, which left him needing emergency surgery.
He said: "I'm lucky to be alive. It sounded like a handgun, like it literally popped. It made my mind go almost blank. My neck tensed up. I couldn't move my head at all."
The 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' singer said after the initial shock of the haemorrhage he walked around his living room in a panic before asking his girlfriend, Kristi Gibson, to take him to hospital.
Describing his ordeal to People magazine, he said: "I knew I was slurring my words, and I was like 'OK, this isn't a headache. There's something really bad happening.
As he was taken to hospital, Bret's first thoughts were of his children with Kristi: Raine, nine, and Jorja, five.
He recalled telling the doctor: "I said in these exact words, 'Am I dying? If I'm dying, I want to see my kids, but if I have a chance, I don't want them to see me in this condition.'"
After a spell in Intensive Care in Phoenix, Arizona, the singer was told he would make a full recovery by doctors - something which only happens in 10 to 20 per cent of cases of people suffering from haemorrhages such as Bret's.
He is now in a rehabilitation facility for physical therapy, and is expected to be discharged and back to leading a normal life and touring with Poison in the next six weeks.
Bret had initially dated Kristi from 1994 to 2005, and they then reunited after he failed to find lasting love on VH1 reality TV show 'Rock of Love With Bret Michaels'.
