Breaking Dawn Breaks Out; Happy Feet Broken

It did not earn as much in its opening weekend as some box-office pundits had predicted it would. It did not even set a domestic record for the franchise, but The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn, Part 1 , with a final weekend total of $138.1 million produced the fifth best opening box office of all time, and with $144 million collected overseas, grossed $282.1 million worldwide. It also singlehandedly lifted the domestic box office out of the doldrums as ticket sales soared 15 percent above those for the same weekend a year ago. The weekend box office also produced a major disappointment as the kids' flick Happy Feet Two opened with just $21.2 million, about half what the original earned five years ago and well under the $30 million that Warner Bros. thought it would easily ice. But tracking surveys had predicted low interest in the movie despite awareness of better than 90 percent. (Indeed none of the current crop of family films has been producing much interest. While next weekend's The Muppets reportedly has an 81-percent "awareness" quotient, only 25 percent have a "definite interest" in seeing it. And that's the best of the lot. Arthur Christmas only has a 42/23 awareness/definite interest result.) By far, the best performer on a per-theater basis was the George Clooney starrer, The Descendants, which managed to make the top ten list despite being shown in only 29 theaters. The movie earned $1.19 million for a per theater average of $41,038.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1.
